Sixth Form (Ages 16 - 18)

Academic

A transformational pre-university experience.

At Worth we expect the two years before university to be not only transitional but transformational as well. We look to see academic learning blossom during the Sixth Form, alongside increased independence, leadership and responsibility. It is also a time for new experiences, friendships and for keeping well, both mentally and physically. This is a challenging time and one where Worth’s tradition of high-achieving students who are well-grounded young people is invaluable. Our academic and co-curriculum programme offers a huge range of arts, sports and other activities. There is a celebrated lecture programme and a host of engaging social events to enjoy. These features of Sixth Form life combine to aid the personal, social and spiritual development of all students. It is a tremendously enriching pre-university experience. See for yourself by watching our Sixth Form film.

The quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent. Pupils display high level study skills and are challenged by the expectations of their teachers. Their attitudes to learning are excellent and the pupils’ achievements across an abundant range of activities are outstanding. ISI Inspection Report

IB Diploma

Worth is one of the UK’s leading schools for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, with 20 years’ experience and an excellent record of results, with a 10-year average of 36 points including many achieving more than 40 points, which is equivalent to 4 A* grades at A Level. About one third of Worth Sixth Form students study the IB Diploma, which was first introduced at the School in 2002. We love the joy of seeing our students rise to the challenge of a rigorous and demanding course, developing into knowledgeable, reflective and caring individuals, equipped to thrive in an increasingly globalised world.

The IB Diploma has a reputation for being challenging but rewarding. It offers a broader programme of study than A Levels, and encourages students to think independently and to explore their creativity. Students play to their strengths by selecting their particular combination of three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects, from six subject groups, which is complemented by Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the Creative Action Service (CAS) elements of the course.

A Levels

Worth aims to offer the widest possible range of options, with more than 20 subjects available. Students usually complete three subjects at A Level, although many initially start with four. Our A Level programme means that subject specialisation continues to be a viable option. However, students can also choose a broader range of subjects, with considerable freedom in terms of the combinations of subjects.

Each subject is taught in depth over 12 periods per fortnight. Independent work is absolutely essential to achieving the highest grades at A Level and key study skills are taught from the outset. In addition to A Levels, Year 12 students are encouraged to consider an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

The extended project qualification

The EPQ offers Sixth Form A Level students the opportunity to research a topic in depth and produce, for example, a 5,000-word dissertation on a subject of their choice. It is a free-standing qualification worth half an A Level and its purpose is to add a further dimension to Sixth Form study, preparing students for the kind of independent learning that they will encounter at university. Students begin their EPQ in Year 12.

Btec nationals

A BTEC in Business is available subject to demand and a BTEC in Sports Science is being introduced at the start of the 2026-27 academic year. BTEC Nationals are Level 3 qualifications designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of vocational sectors. These courses have the UCAS points equivalent to one A Level and would typically be studied in conjunction with two other A Level subjects.
