Students were encouraged to make the most of the opportunities Worth has to offer as the School celebrated winning an award for alumni mentoring.
Worth recently won the Best of the Best Senior category for ‘Great Alumni Mentoring’ in The Week Independent Schools Guide 2024. The award acknowledged the work our alumni association, Worth Society, does in providing careers advice, support and lifelong guidance as well as keeping former students in touch for business and social networking purposes.
In school assembly on Monday, Worth Society manager Mrs Mary Lou Burge was presented with a bunch of flowers by our Head Boy and Head Girl on behalf of Head Master Mr Stuart McPherson and the Worth community.
Worth School chair of governors, Mr Jerry Fletcher, who is also chair of Worth Society, spoke to assembled pupils of all years about the opportunities Worth offers, both while at Worth and after leaving the School. He described coming to Worth as a “membership for life” where everyone is “connected in friendship, community and career”.
Mr Fletcher, an Old Worthian himself, told pupils: “When I was here there were 300 pupils, just boys and boarding only. Now it has more than doubled in numbers, we have day and boarding, boys and girls. But fundamentally it has not changed. The culture, values, ambience, sense of community remain.
“I would urge you to make the most of this place. You will form friendships and learn values that will stay with you for the rest of your lives.
“There are more than 300 adults working here in many different areas. That is roughly one for every two of you, simply to make it the best it can be for you. There are more than 80 teachers, roughly one for every eight pupils. They are professionals who have chosen a career focused on nurturing you and teaching you to be the best you can be.
“Remember, the more you put, the more you get out.”
