Classics Cup projects impress

Thu, Nov 7th, 2024

Congratulations to Coco Clifford-Jones for becoming the first pupil to retain Worth’s prestigious Classics Cup.

The annual Classics Essay Competition for Latinists in Year 8 and Year 9 has been running at Worth since the 2015-16 academic year and the quality of entries continues to impress.

Following a trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace, a 100-room villa near Chichester, Year 8 pupils are tasked with producing at least a 1,000-word project advertising and selling this unique property as it was 2,000 years ago. Year 9, meanwhile, have to write an essay of at least 1,500 words on a classical topic of their choice.

For the 2023-24 academic year, there were a wide variety of entries from Year 9 students, most of which were new departures from previous years. These included essays on: gods and religion to Romans, advancement of knowledge in Greek and Rome medicine, women in Sparta, Roman architecture, governance of the Roman Empire, female figures in Greek mythology and why the Roman army was so successful.

Prizes were presented in assembly on Monday, with second and third place going to Year 8 pupils for their projects on Fishbourne Roman Palace. First place went to current Year 10 pupil Coco for her essay on medicine in ancient Greek and Rome. This follows Coco becoming the first ever Year 8 pupil to win the Classics Cup for her 2022-23 project.

Classics at Worth is led by Mr Phil Towler who is pictured with Coco. There are also pictures of some but not all of the other prize winners.
