Important talks for students

Fri, Mar 21st, 2025

We were delighted to welcome Allison Havey to Worth this week to talk to Year 11 and Year 13 students on ‘Managing Next Steps’.

Allison is a journalist and producer who has worked for NBC News, Associated Press and ABC News. She then co-founded The RAP Project, or Raising Awareness and Prevention Project, working with schools and universities in the UK and overseas on a variety of topics.

In the Year 11 talk, Allison discussed managing emotional wellbeing during exam period and how this can lead to risky behaviour, managing friendships and relationship, safety at parties, festivals and holidays abroad as well as transitioning into post-16 education.

Year 13 students received two optional talks, one focusing on gap years and one on university life and the world of work. In both talks Allison guided Year 13 as they transition into life after Worth. This included managing the day-to-day practicalities of life, the importance of planning, how to register with the doctor, how to seek medical advice and healthcare managing, finances and expenditure, how to keep safe and manage risk at university, work or overseas, finding support in mental wellbeing and how to adapt to a different environment with increased independence.

Year 13 students felt the talk was “invaluable”. One said: “Allison was fantastic in providing practical guidance when travelling abroad, including practical advice around passports and being mindful of safety and planning but also how the year can provide amazing opportunities.”

Another student who attended the university talk said: “The talk was really informative, particularly around ensuring I have knowledge of the campus, how to adapt to living with new people and how to manage the increased independence.”

The personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum at Worth offers a broad range of information, experiences and resources to draw upon for all year groups.
