Worth students won the ‘Most Innovative Idea’ trophy at the St Catherine’s Hospice Youth Enterprise Project awards night for their work creating a series of filmed interviews.
The annual Youth Enterprise Project run by St Catherine’s involves eight schools in the Crawley area, all raising money for the hospice.
Year 12 students in our social outreach activity group were given £50 by NatWest as part of the project with the aim of using their entrepreneurial skills to grow that into a sizeable donation for the charity through onsite initiatives and fundraising ventures.
One of their initiatives was to visit St Catherine’s Hospice and film a series of interviews with key staff members which were subsequently used on Worth’s media platforms. These interviews sent out key messages about the hospice and highlighted the importance of fundraising.
Other fundraising initiatives at Worth included getting a member of the St Catherine’s Hospice team to talk to the congregation at Sunday Mass in the Abbey Church, running a ‘throw wet sponges at staff’ fundraiser, holding a forensics-themed escape room challenge, a home clothes day and selling snacks/drinks at a lettings event.
Year 12 students Gaia and Alexi gave a presentation at the awards night about our fundraising initiatives, before answering questions from the judging panel who were particularly impressed by the films idea, saying this had not been done before. Consequently, we were awarded the ‘Most Innovative Idea’ prize.
The Youth Enterprise Project ran for 10 weeks during the Lent Term, with Worth raising £3,600 towards an overall total raised of £28.215.
Mrs Amanda Mackelden, Manager of the Wider Curriculum at Worth, said: “Both Gaia and Alexi spoke eloquently and answered questions calmly and thoughtfully. They are great ambassadors for Worth School and St Catherine’s Hospice.”
Below is a compilation of clips from the five interviews carried out by our students.
